Sea stories were wildly popular, both fantasies and fables, as well as more grounded, darker tales like this one. Marvelous, this one from Joseph Conrad ... marvelous and terrible.
The sea has come a few times in the University Library. We remember sailors sailing into the unknown. We watch the lines left behind its descent. Many men die in it. Lord Byron marvels at it. Percy Bysshe Shelley drowns in it.
